MAY LAKES REPORT

Hello trout enthusiasts,

As it is May I have been out and about and had a few sessions on the River Frome which have been challenging but enjoyable. Made all the better by catching some decent wild brownies and grayling.

Fellow members have also reported below:

• Quite windy, but started on a white apache. Got nowhere.  So switched to a Diawl Bach on an indicator. Had 2 very quickly, but they took on the lift, not the normal way. 4 3/4lbs and 3 ¾. Nice fish. One contained nothing. The other was full of small olive coloured spiral snails.

• As some better weather was forecast today I thought I'd give WZ a try.

There was nothing moving on arrival at about 9am.  I started with an intermediate line and bead head buzzer, taking my first fish in the NW corner.  A second fish came to a spider fished near the W pontoon.

Time for a break, tea and a snack.  Watching what looked like a buzzard on the other side of the A31.  Another bird flew overhead which we saw was a kite.  The first I've seen locally.

Deciding to get a second ticket, I took my next fish from the S pontoon, again on the intermediate, this time with a buzzer.

For my last fish I switched to the floater with a black bead head tadpole.  I had a few casts from the N pontoon, when a nice fish swam past.  I cast to it and it took the tadpole without hesitation.

A lovely morning,s fishing with lovely weather, four very nice fish (as always) of 2-12, 3-6, 4-2 and 4-12.

• What have you been stocking WZ with?  I took a nice 4lb fish on Tues, and then I hooked into an absolute torpedo! to the backing in one sizzling run, right across the lake, totally unstoppable and------the hook came out! Lackaday, quelle horreur etc. Second fish about 3lb. It is some fishery when a 3lb trout is commonplace Thanks!! Jim.

• I went fishing at Zelston on the bank holiday Monday. I brought along a novice guest who of course had the bigger fish; his were 5lb and 4.5lb mine were 4.5lb and 4lb.

We both lost a couple under the floating banks of weed, but then we were fishing a size 14 hog louse along the edge of the floating banks of weed. All the fish fell to a small hog louse fished this way.

• Yesterday was much better than my usual feeble visits.  My two weighed 4-10 and 10-4!  The big one was fantastic.  Fin perfect.  Yards of backing disappeared as it zoomed across the lake.  10+ anxious minutes before it was netted.

• Managed to get up to Zelston to do a spot mid - week.

Haven't had a chance to email, been busy these last few days.

Pleasant day Sunny, very light breeze.

Surface lake midge everywhere and some rises.

Nothing much interested to a small black and silver lure for the first hour. Very reflective sunshine.

So switched to a black midge pattern and had a very nice fish just below the surface to 5.5lbs

Nothing much after that for the next hour so switched again to an olive dun { Kites Imperial} and almost immediately had a take on the surface.

Again a nice fish 3lb 12oz..

So an enjoyable few hours. Water looked clear with some surface weed emerging.

Bright sunshine.....red nose.....you'd think i'd learn!!

• I went to Rawlsbury yesterday afternoon. I started on Chapmans where there were occasional rises. My usual black Apache got follows but no firm takes. Switching to my dry line I got one hard fighting 3.4 pounder in the very top bay by the gate on a skinny buzzer, shown in the photo.

I then went up to Cowleaze and had a 4 pounder on a black Apache. Cowleaze was quite dirty with a strong overflow from the blocked monk and very little movement.

It was good to see the Tufted duck on Chapmans and four Swallows.

• Went fishing at w/z caught 3.3,4.15 rainbows 2.6 pike

Hope everything is going well for you

• I had three fish each of 4lb. one on a black epoxy buzzer, one on blue flash damsel and one on black Apache. All lovely fish, quite a strong wind and water cloudy with a certain amount of surface weed, but very little surface activity. Sadly, there were no swallows, swifts or house martins, which one would expect to see over water at this time of year. Another lovely evening’s fishing.

WORK PARTY

Just a reminder for all those available we will be holding a work party at WZ this coming Tuesday about 9am. The main effort will be to clear the surface weed and cut the margins.

Hope to see you all there,

Tight lines.

Paul
