AUGUST LAKES REPORT
Dear Game fishers,
I have to say a huge thankyou to those volunteers who were at the Rawlsbury work party this month. We managed to clear the weed from selected swims as well as cut the margins to enable access. Both Chapmans and Cowleaze are perfectly fishable and amazingly have hardly been fished. Also, its worth trying the catch and release lake at Viners as its remarkably free of weed for this time of year. A big Plus was the weather it was kind to us for once – a good day!
Some of your reports for the month were as follows-
• had an afternoon from 11.30 to 6 at Rawlesbury after the torrential rain this morning. 3 fish caught from Cowleaze, about 3-4 pounds. Very tough fishing but caught fish were crammed full of little black snails and nothing else. Obviously, a lot of weed around but most of bottom end of Cowleaze fishable with fish cruising around weed margins picking up snails. Tiny black crunchers or gold head black and peacock worked bounced along edge of weeds. Tried Viners. Water very clear with no real weed and quite fishable but no luck. Very top C&R lake almost impossible to fish as bull rush reeds all round and weed to long way out.
• I fished WZ this afternoon and introduced a guest who I hope might now become a member. Tony caught the massive 11 pounder pictured as well as a 4 pounder both on a bfd. I caught one five pounder on a white Apache and three rainbows of 4.8,4.4 and 3.12 on a bfd. It was very exciting as you could see the fish cruising round and usually saw the take as well as many chases with no take particularly on the Apache. All fought extremely well as one has come to expect. I also caught a small pike on the white Apache.
• A very enjoyable few hours at Zelston today. A lot of fish visible but very few rising or, apparently, feeding. I caught my two on gold head grhe and a grey wulff. Both 4 1/2lb. Saw a black mink on the west bank. Probably not a good thing to have living there.
• Two Rainbows taken 4:3 and 3:10lbs. There was a gusty wind that seemed to stop the fish rising a lot so both fish caught on small hares ear nymphs.Water gin clear and weed not a big problem also fish in good condition.Spooning revealed hoglouse, corixa and snails.
• Another very interesting evening at WZ, windy with a good ripple on the water, a few fish showing mostly in the weed beds. Caught 2 fish, 1x13lb and one by 5lb, both on small barbless Blue Flash Damsel. Lost 3 in the weed. 2 fish in lovely condition. There was a very big fish heading and tailing near the hut bank which looked like a brown and refused everything I offered it.
Winterbourne Zelston Closure - Thursday October 10th
WZ will be closed on Oct 10th. We are hosting a Taster day designed to provide tuition and one to one fishing for the members of the BOWRA charity. It was founded by former Royal Marine Lt Col Mark Bowra, after suffering a massive stroke and facilitates activities for veterans and stroke / brain injury survivors within the local Dorset community. Please see their website for further information regarding the foundation (www.bowra-foundation.org).
Just a quick reminder to keep sending your catch returns by email and any thoughts about your fishing day!
Tight Lines,
Paul.
